Woodwork & DIY
I like to "potter" and I'm really enjoying having time to make stuff from old scraps of wood. I purchased a scroll saw recently and have some results to share below: I bought a wood burner too and it's also a lot of fun:
![]() UMBRELLA STANDUMBRELLA STAND - This has been my pet project for a few weeks now and I keep adding to it. Since this photo was taken I have added rope handles and grips. It has about 50lbs of gravel in the bottom for stability, and wheels so that it's easy to move to wherever we need shade. | ![]() House of RamsayThis was made out of a butcher block table top. It's about 3/4" thick and 24" in diameter. I stole the idea from Gordon Ramsay's Restaurant in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. It's hanging in the front room now - very "British"... |

![]() MARLINThis was my first carving project before I bought the scroll saw. I made it with a jigsaw and a sander out of a piece of pine. | ![]() Hammerhead SharkHAMMERHEAD SHARK - This was made from a piece oak shelving. I've stained and varnished it now and its on the wall behind my workbench. Despite my artistic license Shirley claims to this day that she cannot see a shark here - just a pretty pattern ? |
![]() GIRAFFEGIRAFFE - This was made from a piece of old oak shelving. It's now mounted on a circular base and stands about 18" tall in front of the fireplace in the den. I had fun branding the pattern. I did it outside so I didn't set the smoke alarm off. | ![]() NINJA TURTLE 1I cut this guy out of a piece of elm and tattoo'd him with my branding iron. Sonja claimed him the same day he was made. |
![]() NINJA TURTLE 2Another piece of elm and heavy branding. Sonja claimed this one too... I think she is starting a collection. | ![]() DOLPHINSI cut these guys out of a single piece of elm and shaded them with my branding iron. I just added them to my workbench wall. |
![]() MOVIE CAMERAI made this from plywood and spray painted it black. I made it for James to hang in his media room. It wasn't his only gift, but it joined others for his 40th birthday. | ![]() Eddie LizardI cut this guy out of a piece of plain old plywood and spray painted him black. |
![]() Celtic CrossThis is my latest project that I cut from a piece of 1-1/2" thick pine that I rescued from a dresser top that my neighbor was throwing away. | ![]() Wooden CrateMY TOY BOX - This little crate is perfect for holding all my "off-cuts" that I think may be useful for a future project |
